Big & Tall Menswear Shopping Tips

As big and tall men, we love the options emerging in menswear.

And it’s about time! It’s not too much to say that we should have been at this point a long time ago. During the Viking era, one’s size and ability is what dictated their position in society.

It’s great to see that our modern day culture is designing menswear in inclusive sizes. That’s why our mission at George Richards is to curate the ultimate selection of modern and classic apparel.

But shopping and finding the right size is still tough. So to help you hunt like Skadi (Viking goddess of the hunt), here’s the ultimate guide to big and tall menswear.

And remember: If something doesn’t fit properly, you won’t wear it.

Dress Shirts

Few things are more classic and crisp than a wrinkle-free dress shirt. And getting the right size helps to prevent it from pulling and coming untucked, tarnishing such a great look.

You’ll want to conduct a 3-point check: reach over your head, stretch your arms in-front of you and to your sides. This will gauge if the sleeves and chest fit.

To find your exact fit, check out our sizing guide or come into one of our locations. Our staff are ready to measure and find the right fit.

Nailing the fit of your suit is the difference between looking like Jonah Hill versus Chris Farley in the 90s.

It’s always better to have one well-fitted suit than several ill-fitting cheap suits. When tailored, your suit will help you look sharp for both social and professional events.

Make sure that your sleeves aren’t too long or too short. There should be about ¼ to ½ inch of dress shirt showing. If you have difficulty finding your exact size, our custom tailoring services will make an easy adjustment.

If this is your first well-fitting suit, go for a neutral colour to offer versatility. Neutrals include: black, navy, grey, charcoal, khaki.

If you’re looking for something more bold, have fun! Just remember that vertical lines will make you look taller and bright colours will draw more attention.

Here’s a couple extra suiting tips to get you started.

Pants can be the biggest pain in the butt. Literally.

We hate it when everything fits perfectly but there’s just not enough space in the seat. Or worse yet, the bottom of the pants kiss the floor.

Not only does this look terrible, think 1950’s wide pant workwear, but you’re shortening the life of your garments. This is due to all the unnecessary pant leg rubbing, floor dragging, and crotch pulling.

There are a ton of fits available now that have these stress points, and you, in mind. Have the pants tailored to fit the length of your leg and find the fit that works for you.

Our favourite option is the tapered athletic fit, seen on jeans and joggers. This brings a slimmer silhouette to your calf while still providing space in the thigh and seat.

Now it’s time to find your next favourite pair of denim!

Complete the Outfit

When it comes to dressing up and feeling your best, personality will always be the best accessory. Finding the right fit, at the right price can help any man boost their confidence.

But understanding your fit can be a pain sometimes. With the right tools and guidance, you’ll be well-dressed and have a wardrobe that’s ready for any occasion.

And don’t forget, if you love something and it doesn’t fit quite right, our in-house tailors will take care of it!
